Substitution for Sumac

Post by Avery And Maxs Mom » Mon Jul 17, 2017 9:29 am

I am interested in making a recipe but I have never heard or have seen sumac in the grocery store. Is there something I can substitute it for in the recipe?

Sumac has a citrusy flavour. I have used lemon zest instead of sumac with great results. The natives used to use sumac for lemonade or sumac-ade. Hope this helps! :D

As far as I know I think you could use lemon pepper seasoning but why would you want to sub just go to some spice store and get just how much you need for the recipe

Sumac has notes of lemon, sour grape, and chili powder. But unless you know what it tastes like, I wouldn't go for blending it on your own. It would be better to go with only lemon zest for the sour note.

Hello,

Sumac is a widely used, essential spice in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. It's used in everything from dry rubs, marinades, and dressing. But its best use is sprinkled over food before serving.
