Dis, absolutely right. Love how they come out; and NO clean up.

I have a few too to add, back in a bit. Cooking right in the coals or with foil pouches are so much fun and so easy.

There is a cooking device I have been using over fires since the dinosaur days ( when I was in boy scouts ).
The mountain pie maker a.k.a. camp irons/pie irons.

This tool makes cooking a no brainer, my grandkids love using them to make sandwhich pies and deserts. They can be used as small frypans and ovens.
These are filled and placed over or in hot coals and left to cook, turning once.
We have used these in our fireplace and our wood stove.
Does anyone know of these and have recipes to share?

Grandma had one. We used to make her apple pies in it. It was dessert many nights after our fish fries during the summer. We also did Cherry Pies.

She handed it down to me; and I used it for a few years when we camped. Made great scrambled eggs;omlette. Unfortunately it cracked a few years after I got it. Haven't found another since.

It was definitely heavy, I remember that. but worked great.

No recipes. We took Pillsbury biscuits, pressed it into the form; added canned pie filling, sugar, cinnamon, etc, sometimes nuts. More dough; then close and cook.

For eggs, hashbrowns, eggs, ham, veggies, cheese, more potatoes

We never measured, just added stuff and baked. Always worked somehow.
It was a very cool tool

this is one we always used over an open camp fire, everyone loved them :D

they can be done at home too on the stove top, but were always best in cast iron pan or frypan over the open fire, often made without the topping and just with cheese sprinkled over when serving.

Here are two recipes for a round pie iron, I will submit them latter.

As with any pie maker recipe trim the bread or other ingredients that hang out the sides so they do not burn.

Hash and Egg
( round pie iron )

1/4 cup corned beef hash
1 egg
pad of butter

Fry corned beef in a well greased PIE IRON until almost done.
Open the cooker and form a 2 inch hole in the hash.
Into the hole crack the egg and top with butter.
Close the cooker and continue to cook until egg is done to your liking.

Rueben Sandwich
( round pie iron )

2 tbls cooked corned beef
1 tbls canned sauerkraut
1 slice Swiss cheese
2 slices pumpernickle or rye bread
softened butter

Between buttered bread slices ( one side only ), place corned beef, kraut and cheese.
Latch handles and grill unil bread is hot and toasty.
