It is not quit spring and most are not camping or cooking outside yet.
Your favorite chili, beans, or cobbler, etc. can still be cooked in your dutch oven, either in you regular oven or on top of your stove. The atmosphere will not be the same but the flavors ( if using cast iron ) will be similar. Try cooking a Pot Roast.

Shadows I have printed out your recipe for beans. A friend of my hubby asked him for ideas. They are having a cookout this weekend, and all are from dutch ovens. I could of swore you had one for potatoes and onions au gratin, but today I don't see it or any where else. I will be searching the net for that cuz it sounded delicious, even said how long to have it in the coals, but cant find it today. Might have to check my history. He picked veggies, thought it would be easier, I told hubby most recipes I find are for meat. I am thinking of just telling how to make cabbage and potatoes and leaving it at that. Plus your recipe for beans Shadows. He wants 2 thing to make.

Spuds and Onions Au Gratin

Prep Time: 10 mins Total Time: 50 mins Servings: 6-8
"A cheesey dish that sticks to your ribs! Not historical, but good!"
2 lbs russet potatoes, spuds sliced as thin as you can get
2 tablespoons melted butter or 2 tablespoons margarine
2 medium yellow onions, sliced thin
1 (15 ounce) cans cheese soup
1/4 cup milk
salt and pepper
1/2 cup crackers or 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
Take a paper towel and wipe a 12" Dutch oven with a little olive or vegetable oil.
Place one layer of spuds in the Dutch oven and brush with some of the melted butter and add a little seasoning.
Then put in a layer of onions and keep layering spuds brushed with butter and seasoning until you've used all your spuds and onions.
Thin the soup with the milk and pour over the top.
Sprinkle the bread or cracker crumbs over and add any additional seasoning.
Set the Dutch oven in the fire ( firepit ) with 4-6 briquets underneath and 16-18 on the top.
Bake for 40-45 minutes.
Remove the Dutch oven from the fire and sprinkle the grated cheese over the top and let set for 5 minutes or so before serving.
Serves 6-8.

I understand why I couldn't find it again. You don't have it categorized in the "open fire" category, it is under "grilling outdoor" category. I guess I figured grilling outdoor grilling was more like a bbq grill. Anyway!

So strange to me, how I found it once, than couldn't. Now, honestly I didn't remember you called the potatoes, spuds, or that would have helped I am sure. But honestly searching for potatoes and onions should have brought that recipe up. I even used the new advanced search.

The cookout went fine, even though it snowed most of the time!
My hubby didn't attend this, it was a friend of his from work, who was attending this.
No complaints, atleast none that he told my hubby. But I will see his wife Missy this weekend, and see if they took pics and get reviews! ;)
