May Long Weekend, share your favoutite recipes.

Post by Gerry » Wed May 15, 2019 11:03 am

While spring here on the prairies was once again off to a slow start we finally have been enjoying warm and sunny so much so that the upcoming May Long Weekend has crept up on me and has me looking back to last years May Long Weekend Planning for ideas. viewtopic.php?f=142&t=13271

For many it's the weekend family and friends gather to enjoy the first long weekend of the spring and summer season, the planting of gardens and outdoor time, opening the cabin and sharing meals often with potluck dishes to round out the offering.

It’s a weekend I look forward to although travel times see to much smaller gatherings these past years. Plan to spend my weekend enjoying family time, first barbecues of the season, a county drive and a picnic. Looking forward to our outdoor cookouts has me needing to decide the main course, thinking to ribs, chicken and burgers. These are givens at our house come May Long.

At our house potato salad is another must make on long weekends, our Old Fashioned Potato salad (recipe not posted) still needs to be put on paper. Another that everyone enjoys is Sue's Cauliflower 'Potato' salad loved by the low carbers as well as the non carbers. I usually forgo the bacon, egg lover that I am I find myself genereous when it comes to the addition of the hard boiled eggs.

Thank you for adding to our May Long Weekend recipes Dienia. I am sure I made that Potato Salad of yours and missed reviewing. Potato Salad is a must make for most summer gatherings. That Spaghetti Salad is perfect for weekends and potlucks.

With the warm and sunny days we have enjoyed this past week I thought spring was finally here only to see the temperatures drop last night and see today’s weather forecast. “The temperamental season isn't quite ready to settle down over the region. A big cool down and snow return to the Prairies as we head into the long weekend.” Have to hope they are wrong, I am so done with cold temps and snow.

Doesn't sound all that promising for outdoor activities or backyard barbecues. That in mind one recipe I like to have on hand when expecting weekend guests is an old fashioned casserole. Its a great make ahead, add green salad and crusty bread and you’re good to go.

If the weekend sees to a backyard cookout time I will be adding one of our favorite summer sippers Derf’s lovely crisp and refreshing sangria, it has to be the best Sangria we have ever tasted.

A must is making our traditional waffle breakfast/brunch my grandmas waffles topped with lush ripe strawberries and whipped cream.
