Welcome to Thanksgiving 2018

Post by Gerry » Wed Oct 03, 2018 3:15 pm

Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated on the second Monday of October, our neighbors to the south on the fourth Thursday in November. This year October 8th sees us celebrating our Canadian Thanksgiving, making for a weekend of gathering of family and friends. A time to give thanks for the harvest and the blessings in one's life.

At our house we gather as a family for a weekend of family time with our special Thanksgiving meal on Sunday allowing time for those needing travel time home. Our 2012 Thanksgiving typical of our holiday meal over the years. ‘2012 - The cabbage rolls are made, enough dressing to make for leftovers all ready to go, the turkey is thawing. The ham is baked. Yams, turnips and freshly dug carrots and potatoes in the coldroom, fridge filled with fresh vegetables and salad makings. Pickles, homemade salad dressings, cranberries and pumpkin pies. Beautiful flowers gracing the tables’

These days the travel miles see to a much smaller gathering but turkey and the trimmings remain a given. I had planned to also roast a duck as well but decided to leave it until November 22 and celebrate along with our friends to the south.

This week sees the turkey in the freezer along with our traditional cabbage rolls, this morning the last of the fall apples made into pies and into the freezer ready to pop in the oven on the weekend as well as making and freezing the shells for the pumpkin pies. Having had my cookbooks packed I finally have my Blue Ribbon Cookbook which dates back to early 1900's close at hand and making the old fashioned pumpkin pie I remember from my childhood days.

Today sharing some of our favorite holiday recipes, since I like adding a new to us recipe or two I hope you will come and in share some of your favorites!

Turkey and gravy and of course dressing a given,

Two more turkey dressings that are favorites here, this Thanksgiving decided to go with stuffing half the turkey with the rice dressing and half with our old fashioned bread dressing.

Oh man! All those photos look so good, I can hardly wait till our Thanksgiving here in the states. This year will be quite different for us. We will be going to our son and daughter-in-law's in Seattle.
If anyone likes mincemeat, like I do, you might want to try my Pumpkin Mincemeat Pie https://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/pumpk ... t-pie-6930. It's very rich.

Hi lovinretirement sounds great I was gifted with some heavy French tartlet pans that are just begging to be used, your Pumpkin Mincemeat seems the perfect recipe for mini mincemeat pies. Printed, no mincemeat available for this weekend but so on for over the Christmas holidays! Thank you for sharing!

While travel time sees our family gatherings much smaller we enjoyed family time over the Thanksgiving long weekend. Featured was the holiday turkey and trimmings with the dessert table once again as we did back when we had a full house. They were enjoyed, shared with a nice selection of desserts in the freezer.

The pumpkin pie, this year using the recipe from the vintage Blue Ribbon cookbook from the early 1900's passed to me from my grandmother and mom, a recipe remembered growing up and one we enjoy.
