"I got this way back before I was married in a Good Housekeeping magazine. Been making them ever since. They are my second favorite cookie, after Snickerdoodles. By the way, as one of my friends pointed out, I was married in a church, not a magazine :) Makes about 24 cookies."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Do not grease the baking sheets. Put 1/3 cup sugar in a cereal bowl.

Step 2

In mixer, cream shortening and sugars, then add egg and vanilla, mixing well.

Step 3

Whisk dry ingredients together in a separate bowl, then add to creamed mixture. Fold in walnuts.

Step 4

Roll into 1" balls and roll balls in sugar (in cereal bowl). Bake 10-12 minutes.
