Step by Step Method

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium heat brown hamburger, drain off excess fat

Step 2

Add and lightly saute onions, celery and garlic. Place hamburger and sauted vegetables in a large soup pot

Step 3

Add the rest of ingredients, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer stirring occasionally for an hour or until vegetables are to desired tenderness If too thick, add more water

Step 4

NOTE - When making this for tonights supper, found I didn't happen to have a can of tomato sauce on hand. Surprised to find we prefer this with just the 28 ounce can tomatoes. I also use the optional sugar as I usually do when cooking with tomatoes and tomato sauces - it mellows the flavour of the tomatoes.

Great soup. I accidentally put in 6 cups water. I used the 28 ounce can of tomatoes with no tomato sauce. Also dried herbs instead of fresh. This will be repeated. We both really liked it. We ate it with cornbread. I made this for Bezazzled in the forums and for Food, Friends, and Fun.

This soup says comfort and is perfect for a cold (very cold) winter day like we had today. It is purely satisfying, hearty and tasty. The only thing that I did different is that I completely forgot to add the corn and I only noticed it after we were in the middle of eating it. Senior moment. It was delicious anyway. Thank you Gerry for sharing. Made it for Billboard Tag game.

What a tasty soup this is Gerry!!! I made this as instructed except for for omitting the corn and adding frozen black beans. This will be made again very soon.

This was my first hamburger soup ever. Oh yum! I used no salt added diced tomatoes and did not have tomato sauce, so pureed a can of diced tomatoes. I left out the salt (for others to add)and the sugar, as the ketchup lent enough sweetness for us. I doubled the recipe so I could freeze some for another quick dinner. UPDATE 9/24/20: Always a wonderfully comforting soup!! Thank you Gerry for another of your keeper recipes! Made for Billboard Recipe Tag.

I was looking for something easy. I like the carrots in this. I make a similar one, but without carrots. I used tomatoes from my garden that I blanched and froze from this fall. I don't think it changed the recipe too much, so I am rating!
