"YES ... this is a burger - But, NO ... this is not a breakfast burger - but definitely for lunch or dinner. It is sort of like ... "having breakfast for dinner" all in one little package ... a 'burger.' Now, I serve this open face; but, you are more than welcome to add the top and make it a full burger. Serve with a side salad for an easy dinner. It is 'ooey, gooey, and cheesy,' so, if you eat it with both buns ... make sure to have plenty of napkins."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Patties ... Add the ground pork, turkey, onion, garlic, worcestershire, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper to a large bowl and mix to combine. Try not to over mix, as the burgers can get tough. Make the burgers; divide into 4 portions, and make just a bit bigger than the english muffin, and set on a sheet pan, cover with plastic and refrigerate for 20-30 minutes to let them rest and firm up. These burgers are a bit thinner than a normal burger because they are topped with both the potato cake and egg.

Step 2

Potatoes ... Grate your potatoes and add to a paper towel or thin dish towel to squeeze dry. Believe it or not, potatoes do contain water. Then, return the potatoes to the bowl along with; the onion, shallot, egg, flour, salt and pepper. Start with 2 tablespoons of flour, you can always add more. Mix well ... if they seem a bit wet, add a bit more flour.

Step 3

Saute ... We are using one pan for the potatoes, burgers, ham, and eggs; and, I suggest a non-stick pan. Potatoes First - Add enough oil to coat the bottom of your pan and bring to medium high to high heat. Once the oil is hot and begins to 'ripple,' add the potato mix by spoonfuls. I actually use an ice cream scoop, so they are all the same size. Press them flat and cook until golden brown on the first side. Then flip, top each potato cake with 2 ham slices, and continue to cook on the second side until golden brown and crisp. The heat will be enough to warm up the ham. Transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel to drain. Cover with foil to keep warm.

Step 4

Patties ... You can use the same oil you cooked the potatoes in to grill the burgers. You want about 1 tablespoon of oil in the pan, so remove any extra. Bring back to medium high to high heat and add the burgers, and saute on each side until golden brown. Being thinner, they only take 3-4 minutes per side. Once the burgers are done to your liking (I like medium well), top with a slice of cheese; then, transfer to a plate, top each burger with one of the potato cakes, and cover with foil.

Step 5

Eggs ... These don't take much time, so have everything else ready. Make sure you have toasted your english muffins. Now, for the eggs, I prefer to dump out all the oil. I find the little bit left in the pan is enough to cook the eggs. Or you could add just a little butter if you want. Crack the eggs into the pan, and cook on medium heat covered, until set. It should take 3-4 minutes if that. I like the whites to be set, but the yolk still runny.

Step 6

Burger ... Top the bottom english muffin with a little mustard; then the cheesy burger topped the potato cake and ham; and, finish with a little more mustard (if you want); then, finish with the fried egg.

Step 7

Serve ... I prefer mine open face; but, you can add the second muffin half and enjoy it as a whole burger ... just make sure to have plenty of napkins. ENJOY! Serve with a fresh salad.
