Step by Step Method

Step 1

These can either be made in the mixer or by hand. If by hand, use a large bowl.

Step 2

Pour water into mixing bowl, add yeast and a pinch of sugar, let stand for a few minutes.

Step 3

Stir to dissolve and add half the flour, sugar, salt and egg. Stir, then add melted shortening. Mix well, then stir in remaining flour by hand.

Step 4

Cover bowl and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.

Step 5

Grease 18 large muffin cups. Stir batter and spoon into muffin cups, filling 1/2 full. Batter will look messy, that's okay.

Step 6

Let rise in warm place until batter reaches top of muffin cups, about 20-30 minutes.

Step 7

Bake at 425 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes, or until done. Prepare topping a few minutes before rolls will be done and brush on top right after removing rolls from oven. Serve warm.

very good rolls. We got 24 rolls from this recipe - made with a mixture of whole wheat and white flour. We skipped the topping. Thanks for sharing!
