"This is a really nice breakfast casserole. It is a bit sweet, but still savory; and, absolutely delicious. I prefer to let this set at least 4 hours before baking; but, prefer overnight if possible. This recipe I believe, is from Jimmy Dean; and it is definitely a winner - and worth sharing. I used their maple sausage; but any maple flavored breakfast sausage would work fine. It is a perfect mix of sweet and savory. Prep time includes refrigeration."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Sausage ... Cook the sausage on medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks. Once the sausage is cooked and golden brown, transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel to drain.

Step 2

Apples ... As I mentioned, you can peel the apples if you want; I didn't. Add the apples, sugar, and cinnamon to a small bowl and toss so all the apples are coated. Set to the side.

Step 3

Casserole ... In a large bowl, add the eggs, milk, and vanilla and mix well. Then add in the bread, sausage, apples, and 1 1/2 cups of cheese. Mix to make sure that everything is combined. Add the mix to a 13x9" casserole dish/pan, sprayed with a non-stick spray. Spread out the mix and top with the remaining cheese. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours; but, it is best to refrigerate over night.

Step 4

Bake ... In a 325 degree oven, middle shelf, uncovered for 40-45 minutes until the center is set. Stick a knife in the center, and if it comes out clean, it is done. Remove, cover with foil, and let it rest 10 minutes before serving.

Step 5

Serve ... Finish by serving with warm maple syrup. It is absolutely delicious - a perfect mix of sweet and savory. ENJOY!

Siggi & I hosted a family brunch today for 8 that spanned 3 generations, so my goal was 2 breakfast casseroles (1 kid-friendly & a 2nd more adult-friendly). I picked 2 from your collection & expected to favor the other because of my Texas roots & fondness for Tex-Mex cuisine. Both were well-rec'd by my guests, but to my surprise this was my favorite by a wide margin. This was beyond wonderful! It barely fit in my 9x13 casserole dish, but was ok. It took longer than your stated bake time to test done, but it was still moist & flavorful. I rarely say this, but you definitely didn't overstate how good this is. It instantly joined my Best of 2017 collection I just began. Thx for sharing it w/us. YUM! (Another pic will post later today or tomorrow)
