Step 1

If desired, rim the glass with a combination of sugar and salt (50/50) by running a piece of lime over the rim and then dipping into the sugar/salt mix. Set aside.

Step 2

Tear the basil leaves and place in a shaker with the other ingredients. Muddle the leaves just a little bit to release the flavor.

Step 3

Add ice to the cocktail shaker and shake 30 seconds or until the shaker is frosty. Add ice to the prepared glass and strain the margarita into the glass. Garnish with a basil leaf and a slice of lemon or lime if desired.

  • When selecting tequila, use a silver or blanco tequila for the best flavor.
  • When selecting liqueur, choose either Cointreau or Grand Marnier for the best taste.

  • Agave syrup instead of simple syrup - Agave syrup is a healthier alternative to simple syrup, and it also adds a subtle sweetness to the margarita.
  • Mint instead of basil - Mint has a refreshing flavor that will pair well with the other ingredients in the margarita, and it is a common substitution for basil in cocktails.

Ginger Margarita Replace the basil leaves with 2 slices of fresh ginger and add 1/4 ounce of honey. Rim the glass with a combination of sugar and freshly ground ginger instead of sugar and salt.

Grilled Shrimp Tacos: Grilled shrimp tacos are the perfect accompaniment to this Lemon Basil Margarita. The tacos provide a delicious and flavorful contrast to the tartness of the margarita, while the basil in the margarita complements the shrimp perfectly. The tacos are easy to make and can be served as a main dish or as a side dish.

Grilled Corn Salad: Grilled corn salad is the perfect side dish to pair with this Lemon Basil Margarita. The sweetness of the corn complements the tartness of the margarita, while the basil in the margarita adds a nice herbal flavor to the salad. The corn can be grilled over the stove or on a grill, making it easy to prepare and serve.
