Step by Step Method

Step 1

In a 5-quart pot cook the sausage with onion in olive oil over medium-high heat until browned (use as much oil as desired, about 12-15 minutes). Add in garlic black pepper, Italian seasoning and oregano; cook for 2 minutes.

Step 2

Add in tomato sauce, water, tomato paste; bring to a simmer stirring constantly; reduce heat to low and simmer partially covered for about 2 hours, seasoning with salt about halfway through cooking (if sauce gets to thick add in a little water and continue simmering).

Step 3

Use right away or cool and refrigerate until ready to use (I highly recommend making this sauce 1 day or 2 days ahead to blend the flavors which is what I do with all my homemade tomato sauces).

We love Italian food, and my family requests it often. This sauce was fabulous! I used it to top stuffed manicotti and it couldn't have been better. The kids dove into this like they hadn't eaten in a week! So yummy with salad and Italian garlic bread. Many repeats coming!

This sauce is now my go to recipe. It is so full of flavor and has just the right amount of everything! We had it with spaghetti and macaroni so far, but I will have it with other kinds of pasta as time goes on. I made and froze some to have later on. I love that it is there ready and waiting!

We have an over abundance of tomatoes in our garden so I decided to look for some recipes to use them. I doubled it and it went together rather quickly. I froze it to have at a later date when the weather cools off. The sauce is fully flavored with the taste of Italy, which I love and my kids and wife will be happy to be the taste testers when I make my first lasagna! It's a delicious tasting sauce!

I needed a sauce to use to with your stuffed shells, and this came out great. I added a little more of the herbs but other than that followed the ingredients used in the recipe. I am so happy I found this sauce. I will use it when I need a sauce again. Thank you!
