"This is the recipe on the box of German chocolate. It is delicious and moist. You can make it in three layers like the traditional one, or in a 9x13 pan. Then frost with Coconut Pecan Frosting. Yummmmy!"

Step by Step Method

Step 1

CAKE: In a microwave, melt the chocolate and water on high for 1 1/2-2 minutes or till chocolate is almost melted, stirring after each minute; stir till chocolate if completely melted.

Step 2

Mix flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.

Step 3

Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl with electric mixer till light and fluffy; add egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Step 4

Stir in chocolate mixture and vanilla.

Step 5

Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.

Step 6

In another bowl, beat the egg whites till stiff peaks form; gently sir into batter and pour evenly into greased pans.

Step 7

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or till done; cool for 15 minutes and remove from pans; then frost with Coconut-Pecan Frosting.

Step 8

COCONUT-PECAN FROSTING: Mix the milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks, and vanilla in a large saucepan and cook on medium heat for 12 minutes or till it is thickened and golden brown, stirring constantly.

Step 9

Remove from heat; add the coconut and pecans and mix well.

Step 10

Cool to room temperature and of desired spreading consistency.
