Step by Step Method

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9X13 inch pan.

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine cocoa and baking soda. Blend in 1/3 cup melted butter. Add boiling water and stir until well blended. If mixture is really hot, cool a few minutes or it will cook the eggs. Stir in sugar, eggs and remaining butter.

Step 3

Mix in the flour, vanilla, and salt.

Step 4

Stir in nuts (if using) and chocolate chips.

Step 5

Pour into buttered pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.

Note: If you prefer your brownies not quite as sweet, you can always scale back on the amount of chocolate chips
