"This is an easy dish to prepare; especially for a weeknight, or busy weekend dinner. When you come home, add the cream cheese, sour cream; and make your egg noodles. Those big, thick, wide egg noodles are a must for this dish, in my opinion. Growing up - my Mom always served peas with this. It is a simple, hearty dish. This is a dish I found a few years ago in a crock pot cookbook; and, I absolutely love how easy and good it is."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Steak ... The first thing I like to do, is freeze the steak, just until firm (30 minutes to 1 hr). This will make the steak very easy to cut in thin strips. Once the steak is sliced, let it rest on the counter to thaw out a bit. It won't take long.

Step 2

Sauce ... In a small bowl, add the broth, dijon mustard, worcestershire, flour, garlic, dried dill and thyme, salt, pepper; and, mix until well combined.

Step 3

Crock Pot ... Add the steak and onion to the crock pot; and, pour the sauce over the top. Mix to combine. Then, add the mushrooms on top; and lightly mix. I usually try to keep most of the mushrooms on the top; as they cook the quickest.

Step 4

Cover and cook 7-8 hours on low heat. And please remember - the size and age of crock pot can really alter cooking times. I have a medium size oval crock pot, which is new; and it takes 7 hours. My friends older round pot, takes a good 8 hours.

Step 5

Finish ... When the beef and mushrooms are done; add the softened cream cheese, sour cream, parsley, and mix to combine. Check for seasoning; and, reseason only if necessary. Cover, turn off the heat; and, let it set 10 minutes for everything to heat up.

Step 6

Buttered Noodles ... Cook according to package directions; and, I like to add just a little pad of butter to keep them from sticking. The sauce is rich enough.

Step 7

Serve ... Plate the noodles in a large serving bowl, and top with the stroganoff. Garnish with fresh dill - and ENJOY! As I said, Mom always served peas with this; but, add your favorite vegetable or salad.

Finally a crock pot stroganoff that does not use tin/canned soup (which I refer to as tin of crap) and it was very flavoursome too. I used just under 700 grams of round steak (and the tip to freeze meat is a great one) and used Swiss brown and white button mushrooms (a bit more than the recipe called for) and left the rest as per recipe and 7 hours later the meat was tender so add the sour cream etc. and let it go for another 1/2 hour to heat through and dinner was served, thank you. Made for Alphabet Soup tag game.

I finally found a beef stroganoff that doesn't have cream of mushroom soup and that I absolutely love. The cream cheese with the sour cream adds good flavor along with the herbs. It's such a great find!
