Step by Step Method

Step 1

Brown butter in saucepan over low heat. Add brown sugar and hot water (careful-it may splatter).

Step 2

In a bowl, beat egg yolks, flour, evaporated milk, salt and cornstarch with a whisk.

Step 3

Add milk mixture slowly to butter mixture, whisking while doing so.

Step 4

Cook over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly.

Step 5

Remove from heat; add vanilla. Pour into prepared crust and refrigerate for 2 hours.
