Step by Step Method

Step 1

Mix 1/2 the flour with the remaining dry ingredients.

Step 2

Add the water until it becomes thick, like a paper mache paste.

Step 3

Add more flour until the dough feels like a soft earlobe (I don't use all the flour most times)

Step 4

Heat oil or lard over medium heat until hot but not smoking.

Step 5

Break off a small pieces of dough and flatten each to the size of your palm, about 1/2" thick.

Step 6

Place pieces 2 or 3 at a time in the hot oil; turn after about 3 minutes, or golden brown.

Step 7

Fry second side until it is golden.

Step 8

Remove to paper towels to soak up excess grease.

Step 9

Serve plain or with jam etc.

SO EASY TO MAKE! And it was delicious along with chili. The kids had it dipped in cinnamon sugar for a quick dessert, too. Just wonderful!

We really enjoyed this recipe...they turned out nice and fluffy...not like the kind I've had before...the hubby made a point to tell be to make them again...my dough didn't turn out dry enough so I just greased my hands to form the dough which was very sticky...next time I'll add more flour...mine aren't the prettiest...but they are the testiest...I spread butter on top and served them with spaghetti and a side salad for a delicious meal...made for "Billboard" tag game...
