Allison's White Sugar Cookies
"My sister-in-law, Allison, shared this recipe with me when the kids were little. The kids liked to make holiday shapes and frost them but I like the cookies with just a sprinkling of colored sugar rather than frosting. When chilled, the dough is easy to work with. "
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon hot water
- 1 tablespoon sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 4 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Frosting or colored sugar to decorate
What You Will Need
No special items needed.
Step 1
In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Add egg; mix well.
Step 2
Dissolve baking soda in hot water; stir into sugar mixture. Stir in sour cream and vanilla.
Step 3
Add flour, baking powder, and salt; mix well. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours.
Step 4
Preheat oven to 350F (180C or gas mark 4).
Step 5
Lightly grease or line cookie sheets with parchment paper. (I buy parchment in bulk from the local food service store - a great price and less grease and clean-up).
Step 6
On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to desired thickness (1/8-inch for crispy and 1/4-inch for softer cookies). Place cookies on prepared pan.
Step 7
Optional - sprinkle cookies at this point with colored sugar, or, to make cookies to frost, leave them plain.
Step 8
Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes, until edges are lightly brown. Cool on racks. Decorate when cooled with your favorite frosting and decorative candies. This recipe works well for any holiday!
