I'm used to getting my veggies from the market and yes, no matter how much they wash them, you still will have bugs now and then. It is an outside market. NOTHING slimy, but yes - a few bugs on an occasion. And then I grow some too, so I am just used to getting or seeing a few now and then.

When I go up north to my friends we pick right out of the garden and eat stuff right there, sometimes just rinsing with the hose if that. So, I guess it doesn't bother me.

I agree no matter how much washing some bugs may remain, now home grown you really need to wash, wash, wash! I say there's nothing better that home grown or lettuce freshly picked and sold at an outdoor market..

Out of curiosity, what makes you say that? The primary reason for seriously washing produce is to remove the chemicals and fertilizers on it. Home grown, at least at my house, has none of that. We rinse to get the dirt off, and that's about it.

I do use a spray IF necessary. I did have to use some this year; but it was a safe spray, but it was when the plants were young, but I still rinsed well My fertilizer I use only in the soil and NO other spray. I just rinse well and the dirt if lettuce or root veggies. But I have been known to eat many peppers, peas and tomatoes right off the vine. But being outside vs inside they can get a few more bugs, but less pesticides and fertilizers for sure.

That's nice, Church. But I was wondering why dana_flynn said what she did. :)

Understood Felix, just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. Because I grow too and understand what was meant. I know what I put on mine. Sometimes I just wipe off. and I feel confident

What I meant was home grown is not washed like bagged lettuce so I like to wash it to get some dirt off :D

I always wash mine -- then spin in my "spinner". I wash my melons, cucumbers, radishes etc. and I don't treat the bagged salad/spinach any differently. Plus I like to let it soak in some water with some added ice cubes before spinning. As most of you have said, it might not be necessary -- it just makes me feel better!!!!
