Cleaning top of gas stove

I managed to spill something onto my stove top that is now burned on and I haven't a clue how to get it off. It's a gas stove, the type with cast iron grates and sort of a shiny black surface. Any ideas?

Baking soda and a bit of water to make a " paste". Pour a bit on stain and scrub with a cleaning cloth.
