Crockpot?

Post by invictus » Tue Jun 05, 2012 3:31 pm

My crockpot is 17 years old, only has a high/low setting, and I've glued the lid together with super glue twice! The lid is broken again so I think it's time for a new one.

I use my crockpot on average once a week so it gets quite a bit of use. I know I'd like something that has a better temperature control. I've just started looking at reviews on Amazon and the Hamilton Beach gets great reviews but I wanted to hear from some of you. What do you have?

I'm probably not the best one to review appliances or gadgets since I don't use many. I use the basics and not fond of many expensive pieces. I guess I take after my grandmother with cast iron and the basics.

But, I don't use mine more than 1x/month if that. However, I do like it.

I have my old Rival, Going on 20+ years. Round, basic ... Low, Med, and High.
It is easy to use and ultra reliable! I love it.

My other, a Hamilton Beach OVAL, low, medium low, medium, medium high, high and warm. It also is very good and easy to use. It cooks a bit hotter; but it still works very good. It is probably 10+ yrs old. I am NOT fond of the digital, they break too much. And I don't like the programmable ones, but that is just me. I have had too many friends with the fancy ones who have had lots of problems. It seems the more basic, the better they work.

Again, JMO, but it seems to work

I spent months searching for a new crockpot. My old crockpot had started to overcook everything and although large, it was round and sometimes large cuts of meat didn't fit inside easily without cutting it up first.

I read so many reviews, asked for advice, got very frustrated looking for just the right one that had the features I was looking for and that would cook my food correctly.

I finally found what I was looking for last month - I bought a Countdown Crock-Pot 6 quart digital. Here is what I like about it and why I chose it:

1) oval shape - lets me place a chicken or roast inside in one piece
2) removeable stone crock insert - I had heard too many issues with nonstick metal pans getting scratched, plus I wanted something I could put in the dishwasher
3) digital
4) I wanted it to switch to keep warm automatically when the timer was done, so I was free to be late when my dd's practice ran later than expected
5) digital timer that let me choose exactly how long it should cook
6) price had to be under $50, and I was really hoping for under $40 - I paid $29.99 on sale at Target

I tried it out on skinless boneless chicken breasts, which were one of the hardest things to cook in my old crockpot, because they tend to dry out easily. I was very happy that the results were very good and the chicken was finally not dry! I still felt like I could have shaved 1 hour off the cooking time, but that could have been the recipe - my old crock was producing chicken that tasted like it came out of a tuna can.

We've used a Hamilton Beach model 33967 for the last couple of years, and we LOVE this thing. It's got high, low, keep warm, manual, timed cook, and a temperature probe. The lid also clamps down so you can take the ceramic insert with the lid either from the kitchen to the back yard or across town without worrying about spills. It does a gorgeous job on a whole chicken for chicken salad meat and broth, grand pot roast with veggies, and using the temperature probe a simply delicious pork loin roast with mustard and maple syrup. We use this very often during the summer when we don't want to heat up the kitchen stewing chickens or roasting pork loin, and it's never done us wrong.
